Hand Raising a Timber Frame: Service Learning Project

Course Overview

Lash the shear legs. String the block and tackle. Haul the line on one, two, three! The age-old craft of hand raising a timber frame structure is the focus of this course. The frame in question - the new timbered entry to North House's blue building that was cut by a team of students using exclusively hand tools in early February 2012. It seems only fitting to raise the frame with traditional methods and the same all-elbow-grease strategy. Located on the west side of the Outdoor Commons, the resulting eight-posted frame will cover both entries to the blue building as well as the new wood-fired brick bread oven. Prior timber framing experience recommended. Enrollment in this service learning course includes one meal served on campus each day. If time allows students will also assist with installing decking on the entry roof. This course takes place during the 2012 Volunteer & Service Learning Weekend.
