Course
Guitar: Build Your Own
Course Overview
Making music is one thing, but building your own instrument that makes the music is an entirely new level of devotion. This class unlocks the mysteries and techniques of guitar construction. You can build your own steel string or classical guitar from one of several plans (Dreadnought, OM, Grand Concert or several classic styles). You'll be building from prepared woods allowing you to complete construction of the instrument during the class period. Along the way, we will explore wood bending, voicing, and some design considerations. Building will focus on tone, playability and creating a simple, high quality instrument. Some woodworking experience is required. It's all about the details! Students leave the class with a playable guitar that is ready to finish. Students must register no later than six weeks prior to the start of the course. For a better understanding of guitar design or for students interested in designing their own custom guitars fit to their playing style, there is a separate course, Stringed Instrument Design (see separate course description).
