Course
Forging Late Iron Age Scandinavian Fishing Implements: Spears and Hooks
Course Overview
The prevalence of fish in the Scandinavian diet has its roots in the Viking era, if not before. For many Scandinavians living during the Late Iron Age fishing, provided a relatively stable and highly nutritious addition to the everyday diet. In this class students will consider original designs of artifacts from Denmark and Norway to reproduce an eel spear, a simple fish spear, and various barbed fish hooks. Students will use traditional coal fired forges and hand tools to complete the forging process. Spear points will be affixed to ash wood handles using traditional linen thread and cutlers resin. It is hoped that participants will gain a better understanding of everyday life during this dynamic period of Scandinavian history. And, perhaps, learn a new way to put dinner on the table! Materials fee includes the use of coal/gas for forgework and the cost of steel, etc. This course is open to students ages 14-17 if accompanied by an adult.
