Course
Folk Art Chip Carving: Hexagon Keepsake Box
Course Overview
Discover the joy of chip carving in this hands-on class where we’ll create beautiful, functional pieces, perfect for display or to give as a meaningful gift. The project for the class is an elegant hexagon basswood box accented with rich black walnut. At 5.75" across and 3" tall, it’s the perfect canvas for showing off newly discovered craftsmanship.
Choose from five carving patterns, from beginner-friendly designs to more detailed options, to work at the level that feels right. When finished, the box will become a cherished keepsake, ideal for birthdays, weddings, or any special occasion.
We’ll cover safe and effective carving techniques, how to transfer patterns, three-sided chips, smooth lines, graceful curves, tips for tackling larger chips, how to correct mistakes and finishing steps that give our box a professional look. Whether students are brand new to chip carving or looking to build on their experience, this class is a fun, rewarding way to learn new skills and enjoy the satisfaction of making something by hand. Please note: chip carving does require moderate hand strength.
