Program Overview
A trip to Grand Marais isn’t complete without a visit to North House Folk School.
At North House, you’ll find a welcoming place to connect with traditional craft, creativity, and Lake Superior. Whether you’re in Grand Marais for a week or a day, you can find one-of-a-kind activities on our harbor-side campus, from sailing to hands-on craft to events for all ages. Sailing
The flagship of the Grand Marais Harbor, Hjørdis shares the name of the mythical Norse goddess of war. Make this year’s North Shore trip unforgettable by taking a trip on this 50’ traditionally-rigged steel schooner!
Sail sare approximately 2 hours long and can be booked online up to one hour before the scheduled sail. Beyond that, call North House for availability.
Wood-Fired Baking
Experience the delight of baking in our outdoor wood-fired oven! In this two-hour course, you’ll be introduced to baking bread and using a wood fired oven. Bake carta di musica (thin wafer bread) and focaccia while exploring the history and science of bread baking.
You can register for available sessions online up to 1 hour before the start time, but classes generally fill up before then. Learn more and book here.
Live Craft & Instructors in Residence
Our outdoor commons is buzzing with activity throughout the summer! Each week, you can stop by campus to see live traditional craft demonstrations with our talented artisan instructors. A different instructor will be featured each week, and visitors will have the opportunity to observe their hands at work as well as ask questions about the craft. Find the full schedule here.
You can also catch our Craft Education Interns on various Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays as they demo crafts they are exploring!

Family Drop-In Crafts
On select weekends in the summer, North House will be having drop-in crafts for people of all ages. Drop-in crafts will take place on June 8, June 29, July 4, and July 20 between noon and 4pm. Exact days are subject to change depending on the weather. Follow the North House Facebook page for updates as each weekend gets closer.
School Store
The North House School Store is the hub of campus. Located in the north end of the Blue Building, the School Store is home to an abundance of craft tools, books, and handcrafted items made by our talented group of artisan instructors and friends. You can also pick up a free course catalog in our store and learn more about current happenings on campus.
Campus Tours
Explore our harborside campus! Learn about North House, including stories from the past and visions for the future, on a free campus walking tour. Meet at the School Store on Saturdays at 4pm for a walk through campus, including stops in the classrooms to see craft in action.
Events
Summer on the North Shore is a magical time of year, and North House offers several events throughout the warmer months for folks to gather, celebrate, and connect with craft.
Join us for the Summer Solstice and Wooden Boat Festival June 21-22, 2024. This is a celebration for the whole family that weaves together craft experiences, community gatherings, and the best of summer by Lake Superior.
Mark your calendars for Unplugged 2024, happening September 19-21. Unplugged is North House’s biggest event of the year, with concerts by the harbor, a folk artisan marketplace, kids’ activities, and more.

Coursework
North House offers over 300 craft courses per year in over 18 teaching themes. Courses are typically between one and four days long and are taught by our pool of talented artisan instructors.
