Leksand Band Weaving: Band Loom with Treadle and Rigid Heddle

Course Overview

Sweden’s richest and most beautiful band tradition is preserved in the Leksand folk costume and is protected by UNESCO as unique World Heritage. Band weaving is a proud tradition in Dalarna. Learn how these bands were used in everyday life, and the traditions of the different patterns.

The Leksand band weavers have developed easy-to-use methods for warping and managing the intricately patterned bands with up to 200 ends in thin silk. In this class, students will discover the secrets of a well managed warp. We will make both self patterning bands and pick up pattern weaving.

Traditional bands can be used for more than folk costumes. Weave a unique bracelet, individualize a key ring, or personalize your shoelaces. However, should you prefer to weave a band for traditional folk costume, there are patterns and materials for that project as well.

Bring your own Leksand band loom or rent a band loom with treadle when you attend. If you don't have a loom or band knife you may rent a loom for the duration of class for an additional fee of $35. Please note that inkle looms or other designs are not applicable for this class.

Contact the North House to request a loom. Loom rental requests must be received by June 30.

Ages 14+ may register for this class independently. Youth ages 10-13 may register if accompanied by an adult. Adult/child pairs will complete one project and pay one materials fee. A 25% tuition discount applies to the youth registrant when registering with a full paying adult; call to register.

Skill/experience details: Some experience is advisable, but not necessary. Projects can be customized to individual level.

Physical ability note: This class requires sitting at a band loom and the use of both hands and feet.

Renting a Leksand Band Loom

You may rent a loom for the duration of class for an additional $35 fee by calling NHFS at 218-387-9762.

Looms will be delivered to the NHFS classroom specifically for this class. Rental requests must be received by June 30.

Students will have the option to purchase their rental loom directly from the loom maker while on campus. The base model (pictured) is $550. The $35 rental fee will go toward purchase.

Loom maker Ed Stevens discovered Swedish Band Looms about 20 years ago and fell in love with the design because of its simple, elegant solution for consistent even tension across a woven band. He was then introduced to the Leksand style for pickup band weaving and the beautiful, incredibly complex traditional patterns, and has been making the looms ever since.
