Folding Camp Stool: Intro to Staked Furniture
Course Overview
Staked joinery is the foundation of everything from Windsor chairs to farm tools. This technique is an ancient bit of human ingenuity that opens the world of simple furniture building: from beds to tables to seating of many sorts, a staked joint is a strong, stable, and aesthetic way to build.
We will spend four days building two versions of a small camp stool, one with four staked legs, and a folding version with three legs. This project will introduce beginning woodworkers to both hand tool and machine woodworking, and get students comfortable with making solid wedged and staked tenons. On the last day, students will learn to weave a twill seat pattern with Shaker tape, finishing off their work with a colorful flair. Youth ages 14-15 may register if accompanied by an adult. Adult/child pairs will complete one project and pay one materials fee. A 25% tuition discount applies to the youth registrant when registering with a full paying adult; call to register. Ages 16+ may work independently.
All tools and materials will be provided.
