Have you participated in North House’s Work Study program before, volunteered, taken a class, or been on campus?

North House is a community gathering space that is open to the public. The Work Study program involves interfacing with the public, crowds, loud noises, working around children, living in shared housing, and interacting with people. Have you worked in a public-facing or customer service role before? Do you have any concerns, questions, limitations, or specific needs?

Do you have any professional experience in house painting, cleaning, organizing, event planning, landscaping, building, or fixing things? Do you have any specific skills or experience that you want North House to be aware of?

Work Study can include physically demanding work! Participants should expect to be on their feet for most of the day, lift 50+ pounds, deal with messy bathrooms, stinky garbage, and dirty dishes. Do you have any experience in a role where you’ve had to work hard and clean up after others? Do you have any physical limitations or other concerns that we should be aware of?

Grand Marais is a remote area. How are you planning on getting here? Do you have a work, school, or family commitment that would prevent you from participating?

The Work Study program does provide housing, a private bedroom in a shared living space. North House does not provide any food or transportation for program participants. If accepted to the program, you will be expected to provide your own means to Grand Marais and North House as well as your own food and basic needs.

North House is situated on the Grand Marais Harbor about a 5-minute walk from the heart of downtown. Please understand that Grand Marais is a small community in a very remote location. There are three grocery stores and several restaurants within a mile of the North House campus as well as a small hospital and medical clinic. However, physical and mental health resources are limited here and there are no local public transportation options, food delivery services, or ride-sharing services like Uber or Lyft. Arrowhead Transit usually offers a bus service to and from Duluth once a week on Tuesdays.

I will arrive on campus by 10am on the Wednesday of my scheduled session
I will be participating in outdoor, physical, and messy work
I will be respectful and communicative in a dynamic, public, and social environment
I am responsible for any tuition not covered by work study hours
Work study credit will not cover materials fees. I am responsible for any materials fee for the course(s) I take
Transportation to/from/within Grand Marais is my own responsibility
My work study credits expire one year after they are issued
