Wild Rice Tool Making Workshop
Thu, Aug 22, 2024 - Fri, Aug 23, 2024 – 10am-4pm each day at Grand Portage National Monument Ojibwe Village

Program Overview

Get Ready for Manoomin Season! Manoominikedaa!

(mah - nooh - min: wild rice)

(mah - no - min - ikay: wild rice harvest)

Help make community ricing tools!

Take part in making several sets of bawa'iganaak (knockers), gaandakii'igan (ricing poles) and nooshkaachinaagan (winnowing baskets) that will be available to borrow from the Grand Portage Trust Lands.

Learn about the work being done to protect manoomin, learn to use hand tools and traditional methods to shape cedar, spruce root and birch bark into the items necessary for manoomin harvest. Spend all day or just a few hours, and lend a hand in whatever way is needed.

All are welcome and encouraged to attend. Lunch will be provided on Friday and Saturday. Registration is not required, but an RSVP is helpful for our planning.

This work is funded in part by MHC with money from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund that was created with the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008.
