North House Folk School

Captain Matthew Ecklund comes to Hjørdis and Lake Superior from years of experience sailing aboard tall ships in the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Pacific. He spends the year migrating between different watery worlds—building canoes in the Twin Cities, sailing on the North Shore, and teaching high school students aboard a 137’ gaff-rigged schooner voyaging from Maine to Puerto Rico. Taking the helm here in Grand Marais, he is humbled and happy to return home to Minnesota to sail on Superior. Ashore, Matthew enjoys painting and drawing, biking, playing the Tahitian Ukulele, learning sea shanties, and telling stories ’round the fire.
