Wetland Ecology of N.E. Minnesota

Course Overview

Join in an exploration sampler of the unique and often overlooked wetland habitats of northeastern Minnesota. These highly diverse and ecologically rich areas include cedar and ash swamps, spruce bogs, shrubby fens, and woodland beaver ponds. These wetlands have a unique and important part in the history and ecological mosaic of the region. An emphasis on the characteristic plants and animals of each wetland will be the unifying theme of the day. The course begins with an introduction to wetland ecology and some of the plant and animal species to be encountered. A variety of field excursions are planned to be visited throughout the day - bring your hiking footwear and expect to get your feet wet! The passionate beginner to the well-versed wetland enthusiast will all benefit from the discussions held throughout the course and the series of guided hikes.
