Tricks of Architectural Turning

Course Overview

From balusters to wooden columns, architectural elements made on the lathe have been a part of European buildings and homes since the early renaissance. In the U.S., architectural woodturning became particularly ornate during the Federalist Era through the Victorian era. In this class students will learn proper spindle techniques, rosettes, offset, split turning and holding techniques. Beth Ireland will share techniques that she has developed over a thirty-year career of architectural woodturning. Open to students of all levels, but some prior experience woodcarving or turning will be useful.
