Side Draft Forge Hood: Build Your Own & Service Learning Project

Course Overview

One plus one is two! Build one for you – build one for North House. The Side Draft Forge is a classic blacksmithing resource. Tired of smoke swirling around your face? Discouraged by the inconvenience of a large chimney hood directly above your forge? The Side Draft Forge Hood solves both of these problems. A side draft hood sits, of course, on the side of your forge. Made of heavy gauge tin sheeting, the roughly rectangular box (12” deep, 32” wide, 36” tall) connects to a large 12” diameter chimney. A strategically placed baffle utilizes the heat from the forge’s fire to create a strong draft that pulls smoke and fumes to the side and up the chimney without the need for mechanical ventilation. Side draft hoods work for all coal forges. Each student will head for home with a completed hood and a set of plans to make more. As time allows students will learn some basic blacksmithing and forge management skills. Working together, students will build five additional side draft hoods for North House’s new Blacksmith Shed classroom building.
