Rosemaling Agder Style
Course Overview
In this class, students will explore the Agder designs of southern Norway. You will discuss style differences between the regions of Vest Agder, Setesdal, and Aust Agder and then complete a project of your own designed by the instructor. You will also review basic rosemaling painting techniques including stroke work and line work. This course is best for an advanced beginner and up, but beginners are welcome. This course is open to students ages 14+ if accompanied by an adult. A materials fee of $25- $75 will be due at the conclusion of class.
THIS COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT IN OILS. If you wish to use acrylics you are welcome to join us but you must bring your own paints and mediums.
The basic materials fee is $5 for all students.
The palette fee for use of instructors oil paints and mediums is an additional $10.
Wooden ware project cost is $20-30. Instructors will bring wooden project to class.
Brushes are available for purchase but will also be available for use in class. If you wish to purchase brushes from the instructors the cost is $10-40 depending on how many you purchase.
Required Tools

- Small jar with lid
- Paper towel
- Paper and Pencil for taking notes
Optional Tools
Instructors will have oil paints, mediums, and background painting materials available as part of the materials fees described above. If you wish to bring your own here are the oil colors we will be using:
- Prussian Blue
- Venetian or English Red
- Terre Verte (green earth )
- Yellow Ochre
- Raw Sienna
- Burnt Sienna
- Raw Umber
- Burnt Umber
- Titanium White or Unbleached Titanium White
- Cadmium Red Light
- Mars Black
Brushes
Good brushes are important. Good brands are King Art and Princeton. They are available online. See note from the instructor below for online companies. Instructors will also have brushes for use or purchase.
- # 2,4 & 6 Filberts
- #1 or #2 script or mid liners
Online art supply companies include www.jerrysartarama.com , www.dickblick.com , www.Vesterheim.org , Amazon has art supplies as well but not all in one place. Micheals and Hobby Lobby typically carry student grade oil paints which are less expensive but have less pigment. Instructors will have brushes for use and for sale.
Materials Fee
