Course Overview

Every jewelry box is home to some neglected and abandoned treasures: pieces once loved or of sentimental value but now of questionable fashion, unfinished or slightly broken items. Inspired by the age-old folk value of resourcefulness, turn your old items into fabulous new jewelry. Jewelry design, problem solving, construction and craftsmanship will be emphasized in this class. Construction techniques such as bezel setting, riveting, prong setting, and chain making will be demonstrated based on the student designs and projects. Students will work on their own projects with instructor guidance. Some soldering experience is helpful but not required.

Students will spend the first segment of the class designing their projects; coming up with ideas for a necklace, bracelet or earrings out of their vintage jewelry or pieces they choose to rework. They will then spend the remainder of the class time developing and advancing their fabrication skills that could include cutting, shaping, soldering, texturing, and setting. Students are asked to bring a good selection of vintage, costume or pieces from past classes for design consideration. Students will be deconstructing the pieces they use, so are asked NOT to bring fine gemstones or jewelry. This class is good for all students who enjoy being inspired by people of varying levels of skill and experience.

All tools will be provided. Students who have metalsmith hand tools are encouraged to bring them. Sterling silver and copper wire and sheet metal will be available for purchase at the time of the class. Note, this class will not include wire wrapping.
