Northern Ecology

North Shore Area Plants

Course Overview

Become the family expert on the boreal forest. In this two day workshop, you'll learn to identify and appreciate some trees, shrubs, wildflowers, ferns, clubmosses, horsetails, and lichens of the boreal forest area. Enjoy the colors of wildflowers of late summer and early fall. Yes, the aster and goldenrods will be blooming by mid-August. We'll also go grazing, as we pick and eat wild fruits, including serviceberries, wild red raspberries, thimbleberries, and blueberries. Look for beard lichens in branches of conifers, and the elegant sunburst lichen over stretches of rock frequented by gulls. We will share rides and hike to a variety of field sites to observe the beauty of plants at the height of the summer season.
