Machine Knitting for Novices

Course Overview

Machine knitting is enjoying a renaissance. Learn how you can make complex looking knit articles using knitting machines. Home knitting machines were popular in the early 1900s and again in the 1970s. Today’s modern machines allow you to make texture, fairisle designs, lace and create beautiful complex designs using features built into the machine. Knitting machines are not highly technical and you can learn the basics in a few days of focused practice. Is there a knitting machine in your future? This class is an opportunity to try machine knitting with J. Wurst, the editor of Machine Knitting Inspiration.

J. Wurst encourages people to express their creativity through garments or fiber art made on the knitting machine. The instructor will bring a variety of knitting machines for students to try and examples of appropriate yarn to use on the knitting machine. Students will complete several of the following projects during this hands on class: fashion scarf, cowl, triangular shawl, afghan or baby blanket, knitted gnome, knitweave table runner, cotton washcloth, sleeveless no-shape sweater. The instructor will demonstrate stockinet, tuck stitch, knitweave, picot edging, fairisle, Scandinavian motifs, plaids, argyles. Techniques learned can include casting on, increases, decreases, cables, stripes, hanging a hem, mock rib, reforming stitches for ribbing, binding off, latching seams, automatic knit-on fringe, needle felting on knits. Let's use the knitting machine to explore your creative side!
