The log cabin is an iconic American quilting pattern with endless possible iterations, and it is a pattern that shows up in many historical Swedish quilts as well. Whether you are a veteran quilter or just beginning, the log cabin is a wonderful format for exploring composition, contrast, and color with fabric. 

Class will begin with an overview of the history of the log cabin pattern, its construction, and examples of traditional and improvisational log cabin quilts to get inspired. Each participant will bring fabric to work with to construct a quilt top, resulting in varied and individual results. 

The instructor will email participants two weeks before class to assess and plan materials needed, and to answer any questions. Participants will complete the quilt top in class, and in the process will learn both creative and technical skills: pairing fabrics for dynamic compositions, various strategies for piecing quilt blocks, and assembling a quilt top.

Our time together will conclude with a discussion of options for finishing at home, and participants will have access to instructional videos and other resources for finishing their quilts at home.

This is a fun, flexible, and intuitive approach to quilting; no intimidating math, perfect corners, or straight lines are required. All skill levels are welcome. Students must be able to sew a straight seam and have a basic knowledge of sewing machine use and troubleshooting.

Materials fee

• $10 payable to instructor in class. 
• Fabric and thread will be available to buy if needed. Students can expect to spend $5-30 depending on amount needed (priced by the ½ yard).

Required materials

• A functional sewing machine and basic working knowledge of it. There may be time to answer some questions related to sewing machine maintenance, but instruction will focus on design and sewing processes. North House can provide machines for students to use. Please contact info@northhouse.org at least two weeks before class to request use of a sewing machine. 
• Fabric to make a quilt top: choose light, medium, and dark colors for a range in contrast. Traditional log cabin blocks are made from white, black, and red fabrics, but all colors and prints are welcome. 

Provided materials

• Irons and ironing boards, thread, pins, and other miscellaneous materials. North House has sewing machines available to students who are unable to bring their own.

Optional Tools

• Any favorite tools you want to work with (scissors, rotary cutter and mat, etc).
