The Sámi are Scandinavia’s only UN-recognized indigenous people. This class will focus on the Skolt Sami, whose traditional homeland lies at the junction of Norway, Finland and Russia. Instructor Laura Ricketts wrote the pattern for these historical socks and they were featured in the Jan/Feb 2018 historical knitting edition of PieceWork magazine. Join us in beginning the sock cuffs with symbolic, Skolt patterns as we examine their rich tradition in wool. Students should be able to knit, purl, knit in the round and have stranding experience.

• Yarn: Cascade 220 (100% Peruvian highland wool; 220 yd [200 m]/31/2 oz [100 g]) in the following colors: #7822 Van Dyke brown (MC), #7827 goldenrod (A), #4147 lemon yellow (B), and #7804 shrimp (C), you will need 1 skein of each color.
• Needles Size 6 (4 mm). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
• Notions Markers (m); stitch holder; tapestry needle
