Intro to Spar Making

Course Overview

Students will construct a wooden spar designed to carry a working sprit rig sail. This course will cover the design and sizing of a spar, laying off the taper from butt to head, cutting and shaping the proper taper, finishing and rigging of the spar. This spar will be constructed from solid timber but discussions on laminated spar construction will be covered. Students work together on a single spar. This course relates to other watercraft that require a spar, including discussion about spars involved in sailing canoes and daysailers.
