"Hollow forms turned through a small opening were always a challenge for me to turn,” notes guest instructor Mark Gardner. In this class, he’ll teach students his workaround for this classic turned project. Students will make hollow forms using green wood, much like a lidded box, only they will glue the lid back on. Not only is there less risk of turning through the side of the vessel, but it is also easier to gauge the wall thickness as well as remove the shavings from the inside. The course will focus on techniques for making a precise joint to help ensure that the piece stays together as it dries. Time will be spent demonstrating various ways to then hide the seam in the vessel, resulting in a hollowed form that only a keen observer would ask “one piece or two?”  While this course is appropriate for beginning turners, it is not recommended for those who have never used a lathe before.
