Northern Ecology

Freshwater Studies Sailing Adventure

Course Overview

This 'at sea' immersion course is designed to increase awareness and understanding of Lake Superior and its freshwater environment, and to enrich laboratory and field teaching techniques for teachers or environmental education students. This one-of-a-kind learning experience takes place aboard the educational sailing vessel, the Hjørdis, a 50-foot schooner. Possible destinations include Grand Portage and Susie Islands or the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Following an established ‘freshwater studies’ curriculum that blends nautical science, freshwater ecology, related areas of meteorology, geology and geography, and the cultural and economic history of the area, participants can use their experiences at sea to enhance their teaching style. No sailing experience necessary! Teachers are encouraged to use this experience for Continuing Education Credits. Tuition includes food and on-board lodging throughout the course. Separate tuition payment & cancellation policies apply to this course.
