Dovetail Box: Simple Wood Joinery

Course Overview

In the days before stackable plastic bins and closet organizers, a simple wooden box was the answer to all your storage needs. Constructed with dovetailed joints, boxes like these were used by many immigrant cultures in North America. Over the course of three days, primarily using hand tools, you'll build a 9" x 9" x 18" dovetailed pine box, with wooden hinges, using no metal other than 2 screws. We will finish the completed box with traditional milk paint that we will make ourselves, from milk! !A great introduction to hand tools, this class is appropriate for beginning wood-workers and more experienced students. The length of the course ensures a relaxed unhurried environment where students can visit while they work and complete their project with attention to detail and personal touches. Great for storing keepsakes or your latest knitting project, the boxes can also be carved or otherwise decorated using skills learned in other North House classes. You won't need any special skills other than a willingness to learn and enough strength to push the tools! ( a 12 year old can do it!)
