Design and Construction of the Windsor Chair

Course Overview

This course provides an overview of Windsor Chair design and construction. The origins and history of Windsor Chairs will be explored along with the traditional methods and tools used to construct them. Gain hands-on knowledge by building a bowback Windsor Chair. Selection of appropriate materials, splitting of green wood for legs and stretchers, steam bending the chair back, and sculpting the seat with hand tools will be covered. The spring-pole lathe, a simple foot powered wood turning machine, will be used for shaping rough lumber into legs. Simple joinery methods will be employed for the final assembly.
