Decorative and functional ironwork has a long history throughout the North Country. Hinges, gates, fireplace tools, or even the humble candlestick: the most ordinary of objects becomes a striking work of art. In this class, students will create their own unique candle holder or sconce. The course will cover topics including safety in the shop, forging pipe, fullering, punching holes, splitting, riveting, decorative chasing/scrolling, and forge braising. This project provides a great opportunity for blacksmiths with a basic skill set to explore a new form and acquire new skills along the way. This course will be vigorous and physical; although not required, students are encouraged to enroll in the single day course “Forgework Skills Refresher” prior to this experience to brush up or acquire skills. Students ages 16 and up with appropriate experience are welcome to participate.
