Build Your Own Shave Horse
Course Overview
Following a proven design, students will build their own versatile “Two-Rail” style shaving horse. The base for this horse can also accommodate a spoon mule or bowl horse heads, as well as other workholding accessories that plug into the platform. This design is very portable, and is especially suited for green woodworkers. Days 1 and 2 will focus on constructing a sturdy four-legged base that folds for storage or transport. Day 3 involves construction of the “horse” head for workpiece clamping. Day 4 involves finishing work, final tweaking, perhaps painting, and some practical tips on using the new horse. Examples of additional “heads” that can integrate with this base (spoon mule, bowl horse, etc.) will also be demonstrated and resources for building them will be shared. This class is open to youth ages 14+ to participate with a full-paying adult. Together they will build one project and pay one materials fee. Students will be contacted several weeks ahead of this class to assess their intentions and the materials they will need. This pattern has been adapted, but was significantly influenced by previous designs made by Curtis Buchanan, Carl Swennsson, Tim Manney, Jarrod Dahl, Dawson Moore, David Fisher, and Mike Loeffler.
