Birch Bark Sawtooth Table Basket

Course Overview

Like the landscape of the North Shore, this basket has sawtooths adorning the rim. Discover the sturdiness and the beauty of birch bark by weaving a medium tabletop basket; perfect for organizing or displaying with its large base, shallow walls, and sturdy rim structure.  This rim design will elevate your weaving skills by adding a three-dimensional pattern that mimics the zigzags of the Sawtooth Mountains along Lake Superior. In this course, students will learn the history of birch, how to obtain & prepare the bark, and how to use the double-diagonal plaited weave.  The materials vary based on the size of the students' baskets. All baskets will remain under 12”x12”x5.” It is helpful if students have prior weaving experience but not necessary for this class. Age 16+ may sign up for this course.

Physical Ability/Skills Needed: All students will be expected to process some of their own weavers, which requires good hand dexterity. Some experience working with your hands is helpful. Most students have found this class to be harder than expected.
