Bateau Restoration Project

Course Overview

Originally built as part of a 4th grade school group project, the historic 19’ wooden bateau, Whisper, is a trademark on the North House Folk School waterfront. She was designed after the flat-bottomed rafting boats of the logging era in Minnesota. Participants in this service learning project will work with Sean Koomen, a professional boatbuilder, to replace the bottom planking of this flat-hulled wooden boat. Participants will learn how to assess wooden boat damage and identify what types of repairs are required. Working with simple hand tools, participants will help repair this historic wooden boat and get her back on the water in a two-day period. A great learning opportunity for those considering restoring a hull of their own and feeling daunted by the task. Or just a great opportunity to use simple hand tools and learn some universal wood working skills. All experience levels welcome!
