Basketry
Advancing with Coiled Baskets
Course Overview
Step into the exciting world of patterns and textures in coiled baskets. Using a variety of grasses, sedges, cattails, and irises, we will explore combining a variety of coiled basket stitches to create stunning designs. While making at least two baskets, students will learn the Diamond stitch, Open Flower stitch, and explore how to incorporate beads. Students are encouraged to bring beads of their color choice (size 6mm or larger). Thread (waxed linen, artificial sinew, and waxed polycord), coiling needles, and various grasses and sedges will be provided, although students are welcome to bring their own thread and needle if they have specific preferences. This class will be a fun way to explore some amazing design possibilities by adding new stitches to your creative scope! Note, these projects will require some hand muscle endurance. Arthritis in your hands can make this a challenge, but it can work. Be ready to rest your hands occasionally. Students ages 14+ are welcome to register independently.
This course is part of Basket Week 2024. Plan to participate in Basket Gathering Day on Friday, October 4, which features free talks, demonstrations and community gatherings. Full schedule available early summer.
