Woodturning
Woodturning Skill Builder
Course Overview
This course is designed for students who want to build a solid base of skills on the lathe in order to further their progress at home. Beginners are welcome, though intermediate students will find plenty to dig into as well. On the first day, we will focus on three tools essential for turning anything between centers, often referred to as spindle turning. We will concentrate specifically on the roughing gouge, the spindle gouge, and the parting tool. Along with developing proficiency in mounting different sized stock safely on the lathe, this day will be entirely dedicated to practicing five different cuts: the flat cut, cove, bead, v-cut, and fillet. By practicing these skills, students will be equipped to go home and turn a variety of spindle-based projects, from a rolling pin to a Windsor chair leg. Day 2 will concentrate on the bowl gouge, focusing on how to safely mount different sized pieces of wood for bowl turning, proper speed, and practicing all the necessary cuts repeatedly to develop the skill required to turn a bowl. There will be extensive, hands-on practice throughout the day to develop muscle memory necessary for students to confidently continue turning in their own workshops. Finally, Day 3 will focus on the steps to make a bowl from start to finish using green wood, with an emphasis on achieving a smooth finish without the need for sanding. We will also cover in depth how to properly dry a bowl to prevent cracking, the process of sharpening all the turning tools to ensure students feel confident in recognizing and maintaining a sharp cutting edge, and different options for non-toxic finishes.
