Course Overview

Whether you’re curious about using local materials, looking to add handmade items to your daily life, or just can’t get enough baskets, this course has it all. Using willow branches, birch bark, cedar bark, spruce root, black ash wood, and basswood bark, students will weave three useful little projects: a sturdy willow trivet, a cedar bark container, and birch bark basket. Students will each complete three projects while learning a variety of weaving techniques and basketry traditions. Material preparation will be a part of the learning as we split and cut the bark for use. Small baskets are a great way to learn to work with new materials! Perfect for the kitchen or the camper, this is a great overview of materials found in Northern Minnesota.
