The Magic of Northern Seasonal Ponds
Course Overview
Easily missed and usually ignored, seasonal ponds of the northern woodlands are magical places full of life! Many frogs, salamanders, freshwater shrimp, and aquatic insects can only complete their life cycles in these fishless ponds. For a few short months, these woodland gems teem with a variety of animals, all growing rapidly before the pond dries. Sue and Betsy look forward to introducing you to many unique animals of seasonal ponds, the different ways they survive pond drying, and the conservation challenges they face. Please join us for a field trip to a nearby forest pond to observe animals in their native habitat, and a chance to look more closely at additional animals indoors at North House.
No previous experience needed. Participants should be able to hike 600 feet over uneven terrain to get to the hidden pond.
Youth ages 8+ may register if accompanied by an adult. A 25% tuition discount applies to the youth registrant when registering with a full paying adult; call to register.
