Swedish Dalmålning: Using Traditional Techniques

Course Overview

Swedish Folk Painting, often referred to as “dalmålning” actually consists of several different painting styles based on region, subject, and artist. In this course, we will discuss the styles of northern Sweden known as Dalmålning and Kurbitsmaling. Then we’ll practice the basic painting techniques of this style by creating our own project. Students will learn how to make paint using  traditional egg emulsion and dry pigments, and use this in class. We will also be preparing our burlap cloth and discussing traditional grounds for preparing the cloth for painting.

No painting experience is needed. Students age 16+ may register for this course on their own. This course is open to students ages 12+ if accompanied by an adult. A 25% tuition discount applies to the youth registrant when registering with a full paying adult; call to register.

A materials fee of $50 will be paid to instructor in class.  The instructor will provide all ingredients needed to complete the project.
