Course Overview

Explore the art of bonadsmålning in this unique three-day class. Swedish folk painting is inspired by the charming narrative tapestries that adorned the farmhouses of 18th century southern Sweden. Originally painted on loose linen or paper, bonadsmålningar and other textiles were hung from the rafters and ceilings during Christmastime to create a colorful, cozy home. Working with homemade egg temperas, historical painters illustrated allegorical stories that blended Biblical themes, Swedish history, and contemporary rural life. With the guidance of folk-art painter Pieper Fleck Bloomquist, students will craft their own egg yolk-based paints and create a folk art painting to take home.

Anticipate a $20 materials fee for the prepared canvas and use of paint supplies. Brushes are available for loan in class but students are also invited to bring their own; please see the required materials list for more information.

This class encourages students to create their own patterns, but templates are also available, making this project appropriate for all skill levels. A short video will also be shared with students to view ahead of class.

This class welcomes students of all skill levels but is especially appropriate for students with past painting experience. Students ages 16+ may sign up for this course.
