Woodcarving

Spoon Carving with Barn the Spoon

Course Overview

Spend three days in spoon nirvana with the inimitable Barn the Spoon. Barn will offer an introductory spoon carving course, appropriate for beginners and those further into spoondom. Learn safe carving techniques, knife grips, how to lay out a spoon design, carve a blank from a log with an axe, how to safely hollow a spoon bowl, and how to create a smooth finish. This is also a great opportunity for a more detailed approach to folks’ specific needs.

Required Tools

  • Please bring a fixed blade carving knife. A Mora 106 or Mora 120 are great and easily accessible options for spoon carving. These knives are commonly available in the school store.

Optional Tools

  • Feel free to bring a curved blade for hollowing if you have one – otherwise, this will be provided. We will be using axes on this course, so feel free to bring yours along, otherwise one will be provided. Please also feel free to bring any other spoon carving paraphernalia you find helpful.
