Course Overview

Prowling the antique stores of Scandinavia is an enjoyable way to make unexpected discoveries: everyday crafts that have stood the test of time, reflective of daily life in the not-too distant past (unless you’re really lucky). On a recent trip to Sweden, Jarrod Dahl acquired a picnic-style basket made in a common method using a solid plank base, split and carved wooden uprights, and split wood splints. However, this basket featured a unique twist using round, unpeeled willow rods for the basket uprights. In this course, students will weave a project inspired by this basket. They'll learn several splitting and shaving while learning several splitting and shaving techniques to prepare willow saplings for weaving, how to harvest and prepare bark-on willow, and basic woodworking skills to prepare the pine plank for the base of the basket. This project offers a regular smørgåsbord of basketry techniques, making it a great introductory project for those interested in split wood basketry.
