Wood splint basketry traditions are found all over the world. In North America, ash and oak were commonly used, but in Europe, splints were made from hazel, chestnut, and willow. In Scandinavia, limited arable land was needed for growing crops, so people used the forest to source their basket materials. In this class, students will split willow saplings, then shave them with a slöjd knife into finer splints suitable for weaving. Material preparation, which requires patience, hand skills, and dexterity, will take up a good portion of class time. Previous carving experience with a slöjd knife will be helpful. Students will choose from a selection of traditional Scandinavian basket styles.
