Shadow Weave: Complex Patterns from Simple Structures

Course Overview

What is shadow weave and how does it work? Immerse yourself in the exciting geometric play and optical illusion of shadow weave. By utilizing alternating threads of dark and light in the warp and the weft, intricate patterns can be woven in simple structures. These patterns can range from geometric shapes to sweeping curves, and have almost an optical illusion effect due to the “shadows” that are created with the alternating threads. Students will select or design their own pattern, prepare a warp, dress the loom and weave their own cloth. Previous weaving experience is helpful, but not necessary. Beginners will walk step by step through dressing the loom, while experienced weavers can jump right into sampling. Students will warp a loom and select a shadow weave pattern to create a small sample of experimentation, followed by the creation of four handwoven placemats. A materials fee of $45-65, depending on material choice, will be payable to instructor at class time. Students ages 16+ may register for this course. Students should be able to sit for long durations and manage the physicality of threading a floor loom.
