Sewing a Simple Garment: Introduction to Sewing

Course Overview

Whether drawn by a desire for better fit, more original style, or sustainability, sewing is coming back. In this class, students will learn (or refresh) basic sewing skills, including pattern layout and cutting, basic construction, and finishing techniques. Students will leave the class with one to two finished garments, as well as the skills and confidence to embark on further sewing projects.

Students can expect to pay $40-$50 on materials that they will purchase and bring to class.

This course is open to students ages 10+. Youth ages 8-9 are welcome to register with an adult. A 25% tuition discount applies to the youth registrant when registering with a full-paying adult; call to register.

Required Tools

  • Students will bring fabric and patterns to class, chosen with assistance from instructor.
  • Working sewing machine and user manual. North House can provide machines for students to use. Please contact info@northhouse.org at least two weeks before class to request use of a sewing machine.

  • Sewing scissors
  • Pins
  • Measuring tape
