Service Learning Project: Build a Deck

Course Overview

Learn the basics of power tool use and framing and help North House build a deck and platform for our new yurt! Students will be guided on all the steps of the process, including drawing and deciphering plans, measuring and cutting lumber, site layout and leveling, and finally framing, bracing and decking. Gain confidence in tool usage and apply skills learned in this class to your own house projects. Lunch will be provided.

Required

You will need the following tools for this class:

close-toed shoes or work boots
work clothes (clothes you don't mind getting dirty
work gloves

Optional Tools

Students are welcome to bring their own of the following:
tool belt/pouch
Tape measure
ear/eye protection (some available at North House)
cordless drill
circular saw w/ sharp blade

Feel free to bring your favorite tools and whatever materials you might feel appropriate for this course.
