Service Learning: Build the Micro-Bench Accessibility Aid
Course Overview
Versions of shop-made portable workholding devices have been around for centuries. These practical fixtures can function as small-scale workbenches and can be used atop a table or counter. They help elevate projects closer to eye level to minimize strain. They also make woodworking more accessible for craftspeople who don't have the space for a dedicated shop. This Service Learning class will focus on building a fleet of “micro-benches” patterned after a Katz-Moses design as part of their “Build Up Initiative” and their Woodworkers with Disabilities Fund. The micro-bench offers the advantages cited above including three ways to secure a workpiece. Its one-handed adjustable vise also facilitates use by woodworkers with compromised grip or hand strength. Students will be part of a collaborative and collective effort to build a small fleet of micro-benches to increase accessibility in ongoing NHFS coursework. While there will be significant time spent machining parts, we will refine the fit and finish of the benches with plenty of hand tool work.
This course is open to all levels, but experience using hand tools and stationary woodshop machines is a plus.
