Immigrants from Scandinavia brought with them items of importance. Often, these keepsakes arrived in their own special boxes. One type was the sliding lid type. Simplicity of design is the hallmark of this box. These boxes are found in museums and private collections throughout Scandinavia and used well into the 50s as pencil cases. The body is made of one piece of wood, split and rough shaped and then hollowed. Lids are fitted separately. During four days, students will make several boxes in this style using hand and a few power tools. Completed boxes can be painted, decoratively carved or personalized in a variety of ways. The instructor will have numerous historic and contemporary examples on hand and will share a presentation on his extensive research into these unique and special objects. This class requires moderate hand strength such as the ability to open a tight jar lid. Ages 16+ may register for this class independently.
