Scandinavian Band Weaving

Course Overview

Prior to industrialization woven bands have served many purposes in Scandinavia: a hair tie, a swaddling band, curtain ties, decoration for a dress, the uses go on. These bands decorate the ordinary through use of bright colors and bold patterns. Explore the beautiful yet utilitarian world of band weaving with Resident Artisan Caroline Feyling. Students will learn to work on a backstrap style rigid heddle loom to weave both plain weave and pick-up style bands. This portable and beginner friendly technique is an excellent first foray into the world of weaving. Materials are provided by instructor with the option to purchase weaving tools at the end of the class. Students age 12+ may register for this class on their own. Youth ages 8 and up may attend if accompanied by an adult. A 25% tuition discount applies to the youth registrant when registering with a full paying adult; call to register. Adult/child pairs will complete one project and pay one materials fee.
