Sail Training Trip: Slate Island Exploration

Course Overview

Ask anyone who has sailed far and wide, and they will tell you the Canadian North Shore of Lake Superior is some of the best wilderness sailing in the world. The water is cold, clear and clean; the anchorages are amazingly beautiful, plentiful, and incredibly secure. In addition to that, only a handful of sailboats transit the area every year, and you have the makings of a cruising experience second to none. This area is not without challenges, though. The weather is often unpredictable, help is a long way off if you get into trouble, and with thousands of rocky reefs, navigation can be a challenge, to say the least. However, with an experienced captain, a stout boat, and an intrepid crew, the doorway opens to a truly magical sailing experience.

Join Captain Mark Gordon and his family aboard the 40-foot, steel cutter Amicus II as you explore the spectacular waters between Grand Portage and the Slate Islands in the far northeast corner of Lake Superior. Our ambitious goal will be to make it to the remote Slate Islands, home of one of the few remaining herds of Woodland Caribou on Lake Superior. Even if we don’t get as far as the Slate Islands, there are myriad bays, islands, and rivers to explore along the way. Because of the potential for rough weather, extended sailing days, and overnight sailing, we suggest either taking one of our other sailing trips first or bringing along a strong sense of adventure. This is a sail training expedition, so participants will be encouraged to take part in all aspects of the trip including standing watch, navigation and sail handling. Feel free to contact Captain Mark if you have questions about the trip at: 218-290-5975. To find out more about the boat and captain visit his website at www.AmicusAdventureSailing.com. Note: participants will need to have a valid passport and obtain a Remote Border Crossing Permit. Full boat booking (4 people): $6700, available by phone only (888-387-9762).

Cancellation Policy

Due to the length of this sailing trip and the difficulty in finding replacement passengers on short notice, passengers cancelling more than four months in advance of the trip will receive a 50% refund. Passengers cancelling fewer than four months in advance will not receive a refund.
