Rosemaling: Os Style

Course Overview

Rosemaling means "rose painting" in Norwegian, and is done in many styles reflective of specific regions in Norway. The Os region in western coastal Norway is known for its fanciful flowers and bright colors, making it quite different from many of the other styles of rosemaling. In this course, you’ll study and practice basic techniques of this traditional decorative painting style. Plenty of one-on-one instruction is provided. Some rosemaling experience recommended; see Telemark or Valdres courses for beginning levels. This course is open to students ages 12+ if accompanied by an adult, 16+ without.

Materials Cost

There is a $10.00 cost for basic materials. This will be adjusted for those that bring the majority of the optional tools listed below.

If you use the instructors oil paints there is a $10.00 palette fee. The instructors recommend that you use their paints if you have not painted in the Os style as the colors are very different and can be expensive.

The cost for the wooden project will run between $25-$35.

Required Tools

  • The instructor will contact you after registration with a specific materials list.

Optional Tools

All of the supplies below are provided as part of the materials fee (which will be collected by the instructor during class), but you are welcome to bring your own, as these are supplies you would need to purchase to pursue painting on your own.

  • Palette paper (for mixing paints)
  • Palette knife
  • Paper towels (lint free)
  • Walnut alkyd medium- available from Vesterheim Museum (
  • Odorless paint thinner or brush cleaner – available at local hardware store

    2.         Cadmium Yellow Deep
    3.         Thalo Blue (Grumbacher brand)
    4.          Crimson Lake or Alizarin Crimson
    5.         Cadmium Red Light
    6.         Titanium White

A note on brushes:  It makes Rosemaling easier if you have good brushes. We recommend Princeton Heritage liner brushes and King Art or JoSonja Filberts. You can bring your own, borrow ours or purchase them from the instructors (additional $20-$30). If this is your first class, we will have brushes you can borrow at no cost. If you plan to continue painting, you'll want to buy your own brushes.
