Rosemaling: Os Style

Course Overview

Rosemaling means “rose painting” in Norwegian and is done in many styles reflective of specific regions in Norway. The Os region in western coastal Norway is known for its fanciful flowers and bright colors, making it quite different from many of the other styles of rosemaling. In this course, you’ll study and practice basic techniques of this traditional decorative painting style. Plenty of one-on-one instruction is provided. Some rosemaling experience recommended; see Hallingdal courses for beginning levels. Students age 16+ may register for this course on their own. This course is open to students ages 12+ if accompanied by an adult. A 25% tuition discount applies to the youth registrant when registering with a full paying adult; call to register. This class will be taught in oils but acrylic painters are welcome. Acrylic painters will have to bring their own paints as they will not be available from the instructor.

Materials

  • Depending on materials needed, students should expect to pay $10 -20 in class to instructors.
  • There is a $10 cost for basic materials. This includes items such as background paints, brushes and supplies for backgrounding, as well as other basic items needed for class.
  • If you use the instructors’ oil paints, there is a $10 palette fee. The instructor recommends that you use her paints if you have not painted in the Os style as the colors are very different and can be expensive.
  • The cost for purchasing a wooden project is $25-$45.  You must order your project woodenware for class on your own.  Information on ordering the woodenware will be provided this spring.
  • Brushes will be available for purchase from the instructor (additional $20-$45).

Optional Tools

All the supplies below are provided as part of the materials fee (which will be collected by the instructor during class), but you are welcome to bring your own, as these are supplies you would need to purchase to pursue painting on your own. If you bring your own supplies the materials fee will be adjusted accordingly.

  • Palette knife
  • Paper towels (lint free)

A note on brushes:  It makes Rosemaling easier if you have good brushes. We recommend Princeton Velvet Touch or Heritage, or Blick Masterstroke Filberts.
