The difference between a sweet bowl and a mediocre bowl is often nuanced and subtle. In this class, students will learn how to refine their eye for design through the techniques and processes of batch production (making multiples of the same design). Production work often gets a bad rap, but it’s a great way to fast-track your skills and develop your eye toward good design through repetition and design constraints.

The entire class will begin by turning multiples of one simple, open-form bowl by eye and memory. We’ll then examine them as a whole and develop a new design based on a few select and subtle characteristics chosen from the bowls made during that first ‘run.’ Then repeat. The twist is that two of the bowls from one of the group runs will be used at North House for community events like pizza bakes! After the group exercises, students will move on to develop their own designs based on their own work or ideas.

Please bring a few bowls you’ve turned! This is a process-focused class and is intended for experienced woodturners who have turned at least a few dozen bowls and want to take things to the next level, or for those interested in exploring the business side of woodturning.

• PPE- safety glasses and hearing protection are provided for students and required for certain tools in our workshops, but you may wish to bring your own for fit and comfort. NH provides full face shields for turning.
