Basketry

Polish Bread Basket

Course Overview

Weaving with willow is a favorite type of basketry. It generates strong and beautiful baskets from a material that can be wild-harvested or, with a little skill and patience, cultivated in a backyard. The instructors will guide students through making a Polish breadbasket, also known as a tatza. We will be using local willows, grown wild and cultivated to weave a small basket perfect for bread storage. Students will develop skills to continue willow work, so class will include discussions around ethical willow harvest, materials, and tools. Beginners are welcome; moderate hand strength will be helpful. This course is open to students ages 16+.
