Create a felt art tapestry inspired by the natural wonders found in a day of guided excursions in two unique North Shore locations. Phenologist John Latimer will lead students on an excursion to a biodiverse seasonal pond ecosystem as well as scenic Artist’s Point, sharing his knowledge of phenology: the rhythmic biological nature of events as they relate to climate. From spring flowers to creature sightings, the experience in the field will be the springboard for felt studio work. Students will have the opportunity to make a recording of their observations to be broadcast and archived with Northern Community Radio KAXE/KBXE’s phenology program, hosted by John. Fiber artist Kristen Anderson will instruct a two-day felt making course where students create individualized wet-felted tapestries with imagery rooted in their phenology experience. The course will cover design, prefelt construction, felt layout, and wet felting.

Physical abilities note: On phenology day, students will drive to the morning hike site, approximately 20 minutes from North House. Carpooling is encouraged. Participants need to hike approximately 3/4 of a mile (from car to seasonal pond and back) over gentle but uneven terrain for the morning hike. The afternoon hike will involve walking to and around the uneven terrain of the Artist's Point trails. Appropriate rain gear and bug protection (head nets, bug spray) recommended as well as hiking shoes or boots. On felting days, students will spend a good deal of time standing and physically working by hand (with their hands and upper body) to create work. We will get a little wet, but mainly just hands and arms. Wear comfortable clothing for movement that allows you to easily push up or roll up sleeves.

Students ages 14+ may register for this course independently. Youth ages 10+ may register if accompanied by an adult. Adult/child pairs will complete two projects and pay two materials fees. A 25% tuition discount applies to the youth registrant when registering with a full paying adult; call to register.
