Basketry
North Woods Basketry Adventure: From Harvest to Basket
Course Overview
The North Woods is full of beautiful, colorful material suitable for basketry; you just have to go out there and get it! Willow shoots, birch bark, tamarack bark, and willow bark are just a few of the available options. In this class we will head out to a nearby location to identify, discuss, and harvest some of the material we will weave into our baskets. Students will learn the rules and ways of harvesting in a hands-on setting, and also engage in discussion of basketry traditions, weaving techniques and seasonal harvest practices. We will spend approximately a half-day harvesting, and one-and-a-half days in the classroom at North House. Be prepared for any weather conditions, as well as walking on uneven ground through the woods as we venture out to collect what we need. Using a variety of commonly-used weaving techniques, each participant will create a unique, sturdy basket that reflects the northern Minnesota landscape and will gain the knowledge to continue the craft on their own.
